Purnia: A rare and tragic incident has shocked residents of Purnia district after a baby was born with severe deformities and survived barely an hour.
The child, born to Poonam Devi, wife of Teju Rishi, in Ward No. 10 of Basantpur Pokhar Toll under Kullakhas Panchayat, emerged without legs but with a small tail-like extension. The baby’s gender could not be clearly identified.
As news of the unusual birth spread, large numbers of villagers from surrounding areas flocked to see the infant, many referring to it as a “mermaid.”
Doctors, however, described the birth as the result of a rare congenital condition rather than a miracle. The baby died about an hour after being delivered, leaving the family and community in shock.
The incident has become the subject of widespread discussion in the area, with villagers recalling it as something extraordinary while medical professionals stressed it was a rare but known medical anomaly.
