Patna: Patna is set to join Mumbai and Goa in offering modern urban water transport, with the launch of a water metro service along the Ganges later this year. The 21-kilometre route, stretching from Digha Ghat to Kangan Ghat, aims to provide commuters with a faster, environmentally friendly alternative to road travel while boosting tourism in Bihar’s capital.
The service, which will operate electric vessels, promises a blend of convenience and comfort. Each boat is air-conditioned and can seat 50 passengers, with an additional 25 able to stand and enjoy views of the river. Officials say the initiative will reduce urban pollution while creating a new dimension to Patna’s identity along the Ganges.
Preparations have accelerated following an agreement signed on September 20 between the Inland Waterways Authority of India and the Bihar government. The Rs 908 crore project, managed by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation, includes modern terminals and multi-modal connectivity to integrate the water metro into the city’s broader transport network. Gandhi Ghat, Gaya Ghat, and Kangan Ghat will serve as key stops along the initial route.
On Saturday, the electric vessel MV Gomadharkuwar arrived at Gaya Ghat from Kolkata, marking the first tangible step in the project. Officials confirmed that another vessel is expected next month, ahead of the anticipated Dussehra launch.
Authorities hope the water metro will not only attract tourists but also serve daily commuters, establishing Patna as a model for smart, sustainable urban transport in India. “Passengers will experience fast, safe, and convenient travel along the Ganges, while enjoying a new perspective of the city,” said a spokesperson for the tourism development corporation.
