Patna: Continuous rainfall in Nepal has worsened the flood situation across several districts of North Bihar, with rivers including Sariswa, Kosi, and Kamala flowing above danger levels. The Sariswa River, swollen due to incessant rains in Nepal, has inundated several low-lying areas in Raxaul, Ramgarhwa, Sugauli, Semra, and Motihari, leading to widespread waterlogging and damage to property.
Officials said that nearly 100 villages in Supaul district have been affected by floodwaters. In response, District Magistrate (DM) Sawan Kumar has ordered the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres located near embankments. Classes from 1 to 12 will remain suspended till October 7 as a precautionary measure.
Kosi Barrage Discharge Worsens Situation in Supaul and Araria
The situation turned critical late Sunday after 5.19 lakh cusecs of water was released from the Kosi Barrage. This sudden discharge has led to flooding in parts of Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj, with many rivers in the region witnessing a sharp rise in water levels.
In Supaul, about 700 houses have been submerged, and residents have begun moving to higher ground to escape the rising waters. Authorities have opened 56 gates of the Kosi Barrage to control the situation and prevent further damage. The Kamala River in Madhubani is also swelling, adding to the crisis in nearby villages.
Yellow Alert for Rain in 32 Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rain in 32 districts of Bihar for Monday. The department has predicted light to moderate rainfall in most areas till October 7, with a possibility of heavy showers in a few districts.
“Cloudy conditions will persist over most regions, and maximum temperatures are likely to drop by 2–3°C due to rain,” the Meteorological Centre stated.
Weather System Behind the Rains
According to weather scientists, a low-pressure area has developed over the Bay of Bengal, supported by south-easterly winds and moisture-laden air from central India. This system has activated the monsoon trough line over Bihar, leading to continuous rainfall across the northern plains and Terai region of Nepal.
A weak Western Disturbance is also moving toward North India, providing additional support for cloud formation and rainfall.
Patna Weather Forecast
In the state capital Patna, skies are expected to remain partly cloudy throughout the day, with light rain likely between afternoon and evening. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 30–31°C, while the minimum will be around 23–24°C.
Rainfall Intensity Likely to Decrease Gradually
Meteorologists have predicted that the current weather system will persist till October 7, after which rainfall intensity is expected to reduce gradually. Light rainfall may continue in South Bihar, while moderate showers are likely in North Bihar over the next two days.
