Patna: The Bihar government has announced a major policy move aimed at improving the financial security of teachers across the state. Under the new scheme, approximately 2.45 lakh local body teachers who have passed the first and second competency examinations will receive the benefit of salary protection, effective from the date of their joining schools.
The Education Department confirmed that teachers who have not yet received salary protection will start benefitting from October 2025, while those already covered will see their salaries adjusted retroactively from their joining date.
The department also clarified that teachers who have passed the third, fourth, and fifth competency examinations and join schools in the future will be eligible for the same protections. The decision forms part of the state government’s broader policy to strengthen the rights and economic dignity of educators.
In addition, around 28,750 local body and special teachers recently appointed as head teachers in government primary schools will also benefit from salary protection from their date of joining. A formal notification under the Bihar Primary School Head Teacher Rules-2024 is expected soon.
The announcement has been welcomed by teachers, who have long campaigned against salary disparities. “It is heartening that distinguished teachers will be granted the benefit of salary protection,” said Saurabh Kumar, president of the Bihar Teachers’ Forum. He added that educators are now calling for service continuity benefits alongside salary protection. The news sparked a wave of support on social media, with the hashtag #BiharTeachersMatter trending on X for much of the day.
