Patna: Lalu Prasad’s elder son and former Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader, Tej Pratap Yadav, has once again captured the political spotlight in Bihar by filing his nomination for the Mahua assembly seat. This time, he is contesting under the banner of his own political entity, the Janshakti Janata Dal, following his expulsion from the RJD.
The election affidavit submitted by the controversial politician offers a glimpse into his personal finances and legal standing.
Assets and Financial Disclosure
According to the affidavit, Tej Pratap Yadav’s total declared assets amount to Rs 2.88 crore.
This valuation is composed of:
- Movable Assets: Rs 91.65 lakh
- Immovable Assets: Rs 1.96 crore
A comparison with his 2020 affidavit reveals an interesting trend: his movable assets have seen a decrease from Rs 1.22 crore, while his immovable assets have slightly increased from the Rs 1.6 crore declared five years ago.
Pending Criminal Cases
In his disclosure, Tej Pratap Yadav detailed that he currently faces 8 pending criminal cases. These cases span a range of serious charges, including sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to causing hurt with a dangerous weapon (324), murder conspiracy (302), and unlawful restraint (341 and 120B).
Other cases include charges related to dowry harassment (498), the SC/ST Act, and the Arms Act. He has clarified that he has not been convicted in any of these matters.
Due to the pending divorce case in the Patna family court, the affidavit notes that the details of his estranged wife, Aishwarya Rai, have not been included in the current disclosure.
Tej Pratap Yadav’s independent candidature comes five months after his father and RJD President, Lalu Prasad, expelled him from the party in May 2025 for a six-year period, citing “irresponsible behavior.”
Following his disciplinary action, the elder Yadav launched the Janshakti Janata Dal. His nomination was marked by an emotional gesture, as he carried a photograph of his late grandmother, seemingly attempting to strike a chord with the electorate.
