Patna: In a striking display of deference, Bihar’s lone Bharatiya Samaj Party (BSP) MLA, Satish Kumar Singh, also known as Pintu Yadav, met party supremo Mayawati in Delhi on Wednesday. Photographs from the meeting, released by a BSP fan page, show Singh kneeling before Mayawati with folded hands, having removed his shoes, while the former chief minister smiled in response.

Singh’s victory in the 2025 Bihar assembly elections was by the narrowest of margins. Contesting the Ramgarh seat in Kaimur district, he defeated BJP candidate Ashok Kumar Singh by just 30 votes in a tense, multi-stage counting process. The election witnessed a three-way contest between the BJP, BSP, and RJD, with counting marred by disputes and protests.

Singh briefed Mayawati on incidents of violence during the vote count, including a lathi charge on BSP workers. “Miscreants targeted the MLA’s vehicle and a police vehicle during counting,” Singh said, while noting that police reportedly injured dozens of BSP supporters and later filed FIRs selectively against party workers, despite involvement from multiple parties.

Condemning the violence, Mayawati called it a deliberate attempt to intimidate BSP members. She demanded a high-level and impartial investigation into the incidents, a moratorium on arrests of BSP workers until the probe is complete, and action against police officers who allegedly filed biased reports.

The meeting was part of a larger review convened by Mayawati at the BSP central office in Delhi to assess the party’s organisational state in several states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Gujarat. Singh credited his victory to the trust Mayawati placed in him when awarding him the ticket for Ramgarh.

The BSP’s performance in Bihar showed modest gains. Contesting 181 seats, the party focused its efforts on Kaimur and Rohtas districts, where Mayawati herself held a rally in Bhabhua. In addition to Ramgarh, the party gave a strong showing in the Kargahar constituency, where BSP candidate Uday Pratap Singh finished second with over 56,000 votes. Overall, the BSP’s vote share increased to 1.62%, up from 0.6% in 2020.
