Patna: As temperatures drop across Bihar, air quality is deteriorating, causing breathing difficulties for residents, particularly in Hajipur, which recorded the highest pollution levels in the state for the second consecutive day on Saturday. The city’s air quality index (AQI) reached 179, categorised as moderately polluted, while Patna recorded an average AQI of 150.
Air pollution affected 18 districts across the state. Of these, 12 cities experienced moderate pollution, while six maintained satisfactory air quality. In Patna, the Samanpura area’s AQI surged to 281 after 7 pm, placing it in the poor category.
In Patna’s other areas, AQI readings included 136 in Danapur, 100 in Patna City, 132 near Planetarium, 160 at Gandhi Maidan, and 123 at Rajvanshi Nagar. Patna City maintained a satisfactory level of air quality.
Cities with satisfactory air quality included Katihar (96), Chhapra (67), Bettiah (90), Bhagalpur (94), Motihari (84), and Saharsa (83).
Municipal Response and Expert Insights
To counter rising dust concentrations, the Patna Municipal Corporation has intensified water spraying along major roads. Experts note that low wind speeds across much of the state contribute to the accumulation of pollutants.
Meteorologists explained that air pollution is generally lowest during the pre-monsoon period. Dust concentrations increase after the monsoon, and in winter, the air quality in many districts, including Patna, tends to worsen.
