Patna: The people of Bihar have delivered a resounding mandate to the NDA, re-electing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with a landslide victory in the Bihar Assembly elections. The alliance won 202 out of 243 seats, giving it a three-quarter majority. With this sweeping mandate comes heightened expectations from citizens across the state, who are urging the government to focus on employment, women’s empowerment, law and order, education, health, and development.

Residents of Patna voiced their aspirations: “Many people still haven’t received their 10,000 rupees. Factories should be set up to provide employment. Theft and robbery should stop. Young children should get jobs, education should improve, and health facilities should be provided,” said a local citizen.

Public Expectations from Nitish Kumar’s New Government

Women’s Safety and Empowerment: Rekha Devi, a resident of Patna, said, “Women’s safety should be further enhanced. Though it is safer now, there is still a need for stronger measures. The government should also ensure that promised financial assistance reaches women on time.” The NDA has pledged to make one crore women ‘Lakhpati Didi,’ providing at least ₹1 lakh annually, alongside ₹2 lakh for women entrepreneurs.

Honest Governance and Employment: Sikandar Azam urged the government to act with honesty and increase employment opportunities, while Ramesh Saw stressed the need to curb theft and set up factories to create jobs for the poor. Uma Pandey added, “The government should focus on youth employment, improve education, and strengthen health facilities.”

Major Challenges Ahead for the NDA Government

1. Reducing Unemployment and Migration: Despite two decades in power, Bihar continues to face high unemployment and migration. The NDA manifesto promises over 10 million government jobs and Mega Skill Centers in every district. With 3.5 million youth preparing for competitive exams, citizens expect timely release of job vacancies.

2. Fulfilling Women’s Empowerment Promises: Women voters were instrumental in the NDA’s victory. While Bihar guarantees 35% reservation in government jobs, timely implementation of schemes like the Chief Minister’s Women Employment Scheme will be crucial to maintain public trust.

3. Industrialization and Agricultural Development: Bihar’s economy remains largely agrarian, and industrial growth is slow. Policies to attract investors, improve connectivity, and expand infrastructure will be critical. Farmers are set to receive ₹9,000 annually under the “Karpoori Thakur Kisan Samman Nidhi,” in addition to the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, with MSP promised for all crops.

4. Law and Order Management: Rising crime rates and land disputes continue to challenge the government. The Home and Land & Revenue departments have been assigned to the BJP, with Samrat Chaudhary as Home Minister and Vijay Sinha as Land and Revenue Minister. Maintaining law and order while tackling corruption at the grassroots level will be key.

5. Education and Health Infrastructure: Bihar faces a shortage of teachers, doctors, and medical staff. The NDA has promised free, quality education from KG to PG and the establishment of medical colleges and hospitals in every district, along with free treatment up to ₹5 lakh. Successful implementation across the state will be challenging.

6. Continuity of Welfare Schemes: Public welfare initiatives, such as providing free electricity, financial aid to women, housing, and industrial parks, are ambitious and require careful financial management. Corruption remains a major hurdle, alongside the need to attract private investment and streamline bureaucratic processes.

Economic and Financial Pressures: Bihar’s per capita income stands at ₹66,828, well below the national average of ₹1,14,710. Initiatives like the Panchamrit Yojana aim to provide essential services to the poor. Economists stress the need to expand industrial units, improve education and health, and adopt best practices from successful states while addressing corruption.

Public Voice and Accountability: Residents continue to demand action against corruption and improvement in service delivery. Dr. Diwakar Tejaswi, a Patna-based physician, highlighted the need to strengthen grassroots healthcare and improve medical education. Analysts also point out that the government must adopt a proactive approach to attract investment and modernize governance to fulfill public expectations.

The NDA government now faces the critical task of translating its electoral mandate into tangible development outcomes, ensuring that the people’s aspirations for jobs, safety, health, education, and economic growth are met. Citizens are watching closely, and the coming months will test the government’s ability to deliver on its promises.
