Patna: Winter conditions have begun tightening their grip on Bihar, with fog and a noticeable dip in temperatures reported across several districts on Tuesday. Morning visibility reduced in eight cities including Patna, Gopalganj, Bettiah, and Samastipur, while residents experienced chilly air at dawn. Overcast skies were observed in parts of Begusarai.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold wave is expected to intensify rapidly from the second week of December. Night temperatures could fall by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius from the existing range.
In the past 24 hours, light cloud cover was recorded in Nalanda without raining, and fog persisted in Samastipur, Begusarai, and Madhepura. Kishanganj emerged as the coldest location with a minimum temperature of 11.8°C, while most other cities recorded temperatures between 13°C and 16°C.
IMD scientists attribute this change to an active western disturbance in North India, which will indirectly influence Bihar’s weather pattern. They stated that the reduction in minimum temperatures already observed in several districts will deepen in the coming days.
Cold Winds to Hit From December First Week
Cold northwesterly winds are expected to enter Bihar from early December, further pushing down night temperatures. Officials noted that light fog will increasingly appear across districts, making early mornings and late evenings noticeably colder.
Dry Weather to Continue for 4–5 Days
The weather is expected to remain dry statewide for the next four to five days with no forecast of rainfall. Although sunshine will be visible during the daytime, the air will stay cool. Foggy conditions may particularly affect eastern and northern Bihar, while central regions will experience a steeper drop in nighttime temperatures. Severe cold conditions are likely to develop from mid-December.
Patna Braces for Temperature Drop
In Patna, residents are already feeling the chill during early morning and evening hours. The current minimum temperature in the capital is around 12–13°C, while mild sunshine keeps the daytime weather pleasant. However, meteorologists warn that the temperature may plunge sharply after the second week of December as cold winds strengthen overnight and fog formation increases.
The IMD advises citizens to prepare for a colder spell ahead, especially vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
