Patna: Bihar’s first Gen-Z Post Office has opened at IIT Patna, marking a significant move by the Indian Postal Department to modernise its services and appeal to younger, digitally driven users. Inaugurated on Thursday, the facility aims to serve around 2,400 students and staff on campus and to signal a shift in how postal services are designed and delivered.
The new model features contemporary interiors, lighting installations, digital screens and smart service counters intended to provide faster and more seamless service compared with traditional post offices. Officials say the project is shaped directly by student involvement: IIT Bihta students have been engaged as brand ambassadors, design collaborators and social media partners.
According to the Ministry of Communications, the initiative aims not only to upgrade postal infrastructure but also to connect young people with national public-service systems. Ministry representatives said the collaboration would help steer the postal network “in a new direction”, combining government mechanisms with innovation from students.
The department has announced plans to convert post offices in 46 educational institutions across India to the Gen-Z model by December 15. The redesigned branches will include Wi-Fi, café-style seating and information corners promoting internship opportunities and postal programmes.
Following the IIT Bihta launch, the state’s second Gen-Z post office is scheduled to open on December 15 at Tilka Manjhi University in Bhagalpur. Officials hope the modern environment and student-focused approach will bring younger users closer to postal services and re-establish the system’s relevance in a digital age.
