Men Credited Rs 10,000 Under Women’s Scheme, RJD Targets Bihar Government as JEEViKA Seeks Recovery

The Rashtriya Janata Dal has criticised the Bihar government after letters surfaced seeking recovery of Rs 10,000 mistakenly credited to men under a women-focused employment scheme. Opposition claims administrative lapses and alleges political haste after Rs 10,000 payments meant for women were transferred to male recipients.

Patna: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has renewed its attack on the Nitish Kumar-led government, alleging serious lapses in the implementation of the Chief Minister’s Women’s Employment Scheme after funds meant for women were transferred to the bank accounts of men.

In a post on its official social media handle on Saturday, the RJD shared images of two letters issued by a Block Project Manager of JEEViKA, the state’s women’s self-help group programme. The letters, addressed to two individuals in Darbhanga district, ask them to return Rs 10,000 that was credited to their accounts “due to a technical error”.

The letters state that the financial assistance under the Chief Minister’s Women’s Employment Scheme is exclusively for women associated with JEEViKA groups and that the money must be deposited back into the government account.

Opposition alleges political haste

Reacting to the development, the RJD accused the ruling NDA of rushing the scheme for electoral gains ahead of the recent Bihar assembly elections. The party claimed that the urgency to secure power led to “a major blunder”, and sarcastically suggested that leaders and officials were now scrambling to recover the funds.

The RJD further alleged that the episode raised questions about transparency and administrative oversight, though it did not provide evidence to support claims of bribery or vote-buying.

Government scheme and response

The Nitish Kumar government launched the Chief Minister’s Women’s Employment Scheme shortly before the elections, under which Rs 10,000 was transferred directly to the bank accounts of women linked to JEEViKA self-help groups. According to the government, around 1.5 crore women have received the assistance so far.

Officials have said the money is intended to help women start small businesses or self-employment activities. After six months, beneficiaries’ progress is to be reviewed, with provisions for additional financial support of up to Rs 2 lakh.

The government has maintained that the transfers to men were isolated technical errors and that recovery letters were issued promptly. No official response has yet been made to the RJD’s broader political allegations.
