Patna: The National Investigation Agency has intensified its probe into the alleged Popular Front of India (PFI) network linked to Phulwarisharif in Patna, carrying out fresh raids in Kishanganj district and detaining two young men for questioning.
An NIA team conducted the operation on Friday, January 2, bringing Mahfuz Alam and Aftab—both residents of Uttar Palli in Kishanganj—to the local police station for interrogation, according to sources familiar with the matter. While Aftab was released after questioning, Mahfuz Alam remained in custody as investigators continued to examine his alleged links to the network.
Officials said both men had earlier been served notices summoning them for questioning. The agency is now focusing on Mahfuz Alam’s suspected association with the Popular Front of India, which was outlawed by the Indian government in 2022. Investigators are seeking to establish the nature of his contacts, the extent of his involvement, and whether the network extends further across the Seemanchal region of Bihar.
The Phulwarisharif case has been under scrutiny for more than two years. The investigation, initially handled by the Bihar Police before being transferred to the NIA, centres on allegations that PFI-linked individuals were involved in conspiracies related to radicalisation, weapons training and efforts to disturb communal harmony.
So far, charge sheets have been filed against 17 accused in the case. In September 2025, Mehboob Alam, also known as Mehboob Nadvi, was arrested in Kishanganj and identified as the 19th accused in the wider conspiracy. Earlier, in January 2025, Mohammad Sajjad Alam was arrested at Delhi airport on charges that included receiving funds from overseas, allegedly from Dubai.
Sources said the latest questioning in Kishanganj was aimed at mapping local networks, funding channels and logistical support, and identifying any remaining operatives who may have evaded arrest. Investigators are also examining whether the module had a presence beyond Patna and Katihar districts.
