Patna: Two members of the same family died within hours in Patna late on Friday night in an incident that has shocked residents of the Damaria locality under the Gardanibagh police station area.
Police said a young man, identified as Mohammad Wajid, was found dead at his home after what authorities described as an apparent suicide linked to prolonged mental stress. His mother collapsed shortly afterwards and died, reportedly from cardiac arrest. According to witnesses, the mother became inconsolable after discovering her son. Neighbours rushed both of them to Patna Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Residents said the family had been under strain for some time due to substance abuse issues involving another family member. The household’s growing tensions had taken a toll on Wajid, who was reportedly deeply distressed by the situation.
The family’s head, Chhotu Mian, who works as a cook at a hotel in Patna, arrived at the hospital later and was informed of the deaths. Residents described scenes of grief and shock as news spread through the neighbourhood.
Police said they have begun standard procedural inquiries and are recording statements from family members and neighbours. No foul play is suspected at this stage.
Residents said the incident had once again highlighted the devastating impact of substance addiction on families and communities.
