Patna: In today’s time, a mobile phone is no longer just used for calling or messaging. It has become a small bank in our pocket, connected to UPI, net banking, digital wallets, and many important personal details. Because of this, if a mobile phone is lost or stolen, the risk is not limited to losing the device alone. Many people have suffered heavy financial losses because criminals used their phones to withdraw money illegally. Police say such cases are increasing rapidly, mainly due to delay and lack of awareness.
To address this growing problem, Patna Police have started a special cyber awareness campaign to guide citizens on what to do immediately after losing a mobile phone. According to the police, the first and most important step is to freeze all bank accounts, UPI IDs, and digital wallets linked to the lost number. This can be done by calling the customer care numbers of banks and payment apps. Once the accounts are put on hold, no unauthorised transaction can take place.
The second step is to block the SIM card as soon as possible. This is important because most financial apps send OTPs and alerts to the mobile number. By blocking the SIM through the service provider’s helpline, misuse of OTPs can be prevented. The third step is to register a complaint on the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. Blocking the phone through CEIR helps stop its misuse and reduces the risk of financial fraud.
If any kind of cyber fraud has already happened, police advise not to panic or waste time. Victims should immediately call the National Cyber Helpline number 1930 or visit the nearest cyber police station to file a complaint. Quick reporting can help in stopping further losses and taking action against the fraudsters. Police also recommend using SIM locks, mobile locks, strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and biometric security to stay safe in the digital world.
