Patna: Patna is set to receive relief from mounting traffic congestion as the city’s traffic police unveil a comprehensive new master plan to manage vehicle flow more effectively. The initiative comes in response to the rapid rise in private vehicles, auto-rickshaws, and e-rickshaws over the past two years, while the width of city roads has remained largely unchanged.
Traffic police are conducting a fresh survey of Patna’s roads to identify areas under the greatest pressure. Officials have noted that six hours of the day — from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm — see the heaviest traffic, coinciding with peak commuting times.
Based on the survey, authorities plan to temporarily close unnecessary road cuts during peak hours and review the placement of U-turns to improve traffic flow. In addition, new traffic signals will be installed at key intersections to regulate movement more efficiently.
Haphazard parking continues to compound congestion, with autos and e-rickshaws parked along main roads slowing traffic further. Following a recent ban on parking at intersections, the traffic police are preparing to tighten enforcement and monitoring.
The survey will be conducted jointly by the traffic police, the district administration, and the transport department. The Traffic SP has emphasised that concrete steps will follow to ensure smoother daily commutes for residents, including reviewing the effectiveness of red lines and traffic diversions.
