Patna: Vehicle fitness testing in Bihar is set to become fully technology-driven as the state government expands Automated Testing Stations (ATS) to 27 more districts. The Transport Department has already begun operating these centres in several districts, including the capital, Patna, and now plans to widen the system in a second phase. Officials say the move will replace the old manual inspection method with modern machines that can test vehicles more accurately and fairly.
Under the new system, vehicles will undergo scientific and automated checks. Machines will examine important parts such as brakes, clutches, horns, headlights, speedometers, window glass and wipers. After the inspection is completed and the vehicle meets all required standards, a fitness certificate will be issued immediately. This is expected to reduce waiting time and make the process easier for vehicle owners.
At present, most districts rely on manual inspections carried out by motor vehicle inspectors, a system often criticised for possible human error and misuse. The government believes machine-based testing will reduce irregularities and prevent fake fitness certificates. All ATS centres will be equipped with CCTV cameras to monitor the entire process, increasing transparency and allowing quick action if any wrongdoing is detected.
The Transport Department has invited applications through the central government portal from companies and individuals interested in setting up these centres. The deadline for applications is 16 March. Around 10 centres are planned in each district, and they will be operated with private sector participation under government supervision. Officials say this partnership will ensure efficiency while maintaining strict oversight.
New ATS centres will open in districts including Munger, Jamui, Sheikhpura, Banka, Araria, Sheohar, Nawada, Saharsa, Kishanganj, Vaishali, Nalanda, Saran, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Bettiah, Madhepura, Arwal, Khagaria, Aurangabad, Jehanabad, Sitamarhi, Katihar, Rohtas, Supaul, Samastipur, Siwan and Darbhanga. The government believes this step will improve road safety across Bihar by ensuring that only fit and safe vehicles are allowed on the roads.
