Patna: An FIR has been lodged at Pirbahore police station in Patna against 25–30 junior doctors working and studying at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), following allegations that they assaulted a patient and his family inside the hospital campus. The complainant has also accused the doctors of snatching his mobile phone and trolley bag during the incident.
Rahul Kumar Mishra, 31, a resident of Madhubani district, told police that he and his brother Sonu were first assaulted near Athmalgola on March 2 while travelling by train. Both men sustained injuries and were initially treated at the sub-divisional hospital in Barh before being referred to PMCH for further care.
According to Rahul Mishra, the family reached PMCH at about 11:15 am on March 3. He said a doctor in the surgery department advised him to get a CT scan conducted outside the hospital. He alleged that when he requested a written note stating that the scan could not be carried out at PMCH, an argument ensued.
He claimed the dispute escalated quickly, with doctors and security guards allegedly assaulting him, his mother and his brother, and verbally abusing them. The family managed to leave the department but were allegedly intercepted again near the Marine Drive-side exit within the campus. He told police that 25–30 junior doctors, along with guards, surrounded and beat the three men.
In his complaint, Rahul alleged that the doctors appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the assault. He further claimed that his mobile phone and trolley bag were snatched during the attack. The bag reportedly contained clothes and other valuables.
Following the incident, the family said they struggled to obtain formal injury reports. They first approached Gardiner Hospital, where, according to the complaint, a doctor declined to issue an injury certificate. They then went to Sadar Hospital in Gardanibagh and reportedly spent nearly two hours seeking assistance before eventually turning to a private hospital in Patna for treatment.
Sajjad Gaddi, the station house officer of Pirbahore police station, confirmed that a case has been registered against 25–30 unidentified doctors, including junior doctors residing in the hostel and those involved in treatment. He said further action would follow the investigation.
Police officers said they attempted to retrieve CCTV footage from the hospital premises, but offices were closed for Holi. Officials added that the footage would be secured and examined once the offices reopen.
