Darbhanga: The Bihar government is planning a major expansion of Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in North Bihar, with authorities aiming to add 1,700 beds and transform the institution into a hi-tech medical facility equipped with advanced technology.
Health officials said the project aims to expand the hospital’s total capacity to around 2,500 beds while also increasing the annual medical student intake to 250. The upgrade is expected to be completed within the next three years and is intended to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the region.
The expansion is expected to improve access to specialised medical treatment for residents of Darbhanga and surrounding districts in North Bihar. Officials said the move is designed to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for treatment of serious illnesses.
As part of the upgrade, the hospital will be equipped with modern medical technology and facilities similar to those found in leading healthcare institutions. Authorities said the construction of a 400-bed surgical ward has already been completed as part of the ongoing development.
The state government has been expanding healthcare infrastructure across Bihar in recent years. A newly built two-tower hospital building with 1,117 beds was recently inaugurated at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) in the state capital, providing specialised treatment facilities for conditions related to the eyes, ears, throat and gastrointestinal system.
Officials said the expansion of DMCH represents another step towards strengthening medical education and healthcare services in Bihar, particularly in the northern region of the state.
