Patna: Weather conditions across Bihar changed abruptly on Friday as strong winds, rain and hailstorms hit several districts, leaving two people dead due to lightning in Gaya and causing damage in multiple areas.
According to officials, thunderstorms accompanied by heavy winds and rain were reported in at least 15 districts, including Patna. Hailstorms were also reported from six cities during the sudden change in weather conditions.
Lightning strikes were reported in Patna and Muzaffarpur, where palm trees caught fire after being struck. In Patna’s Barh area, a palm tree was seen burning after lightning hit it, while a similar incident was reported in Muzaffarpur.
In Gaya district, two people lost their lives after being struck by lightning during the storm.
The Meteorological Centre has issued a fresh weather alert for Saturday, warning of rain and strong winds in 25 districts across the state. Four districts have been placed under an orange alert for heavy rain and lightning, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 60 km per hour.
The remaining 21 districts have been placed under a yellow alert, indicating the possibility of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The sudden weather change and strong winds have increased concerns among residents. In several rural areas, standing crops have reportedly suffered damage due to the storm and hail.
Hail was reported after rainfall in Bagaha and Motihari, while strong winds and rain were also experienced in East Champaran. Aurangabad witnessed heavy rainfall in the afternoon, and dust storms were reported in parts of Motihari. In Khagaria, people were seen continuing an iftar gathering even as strong winds and rain swept through the area.
Meteorologists said the sudden change in weather has been caused by moisture coming from the Bay of Bengal along with an active trough line across the region. Rising daytime temperatures have increased atmospheric instability, leading to the rapid formation of clouds and triggering thunderstorms and rainfall.
In Patna, the weather is expected to remain unstable on Saturday. Cloudy skies are likely to prevail, and light rain accompanied by strong winds may occur. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 32°C and 34°C, bringing a temporary drop in heat levels.
Weather officials said the current pattern may continue for the next three to four days, with intermittent thunderstorms and rain likely in several parts of the state. This may provide temporary relief from the rising heat.
Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors during severe weather conditions and avoid standing near trees or electric poles. Farmers have also been advised to protect crops and ensure proper drainage in fields to reduce possible damage.
