Patna: Thousands of worshippers gathered at Gandhi Maidan on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, offering prayers in steady rain that did little to dampen the festive spirit across Bihar’s capital.
An estimated 20,000 people, including families, children and elderly residents, assembled at the historic ground in Patna, creating a solemn yet celebratory atmosphere. Despite intermittent showers, prayers proceeded uninterrupted, with worshippers participating in large numbers.
However, this year’s gathering was marked by a significant political absence. Nitish Kumar did not attend the Eid prayers, breaking a tradition he had maintained for nearly 20 years. Since assuming office, Kumar had consistently been present at the annual congregation, making his absence notable both among attendees and in political circles.
No official explanation was provided by the state government regarding his absence, prompting speculation and discussion.

In his place, Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, attended the prayers, accompanied by senior members of the Janata Dal (United), including Ashok Choudhary. Nishant Kumar was received by community leaders and escorted to the stage, where he was honoured with a traditional scarf.
Authorities had made extensive arrangements to manage the large gathering. Security was tightened across entry points, and a network of loudspeakers ensured that the Imam’s address could be heard clearly by the crowd.
Eid prayers were also held at other prominent locations in the city, including Jama Masjid and Phulwari Sharif, with strong turnout reported despite the weather.
The celebrations concluded peacefully, with the rain-soaked morning doing little to deter the scale or spirit of the occasion.
