Patna: Bihar’s 114th foundation day celebrations will begin on Sunday at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, with a three-day programme showcasing the state’s culture, heritage and development initiatives.
Chief minister Nitish Kumar is scheduled to inaugurate the event at 5.30pm, with deputy chief ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha attending as guests of honour. The programme will be presided over by education minister Sunil Kumar.

Cultural and public outreach focus
Organised under the theme “Unnat Bihar, Ujjwal Bihar”, the event aims to connect younger generations with the state’s cultural roots while highlighting progress across sectors.
Pavilions and stalls set up by various government departments will provide information on public welfare schemes during the three-day event, which runs until March 24.

Preparations were reviewed on Saturday by senior officials, including additional chief secretary B Rajender, who inspected arrangements at the venue.
Performances and events
The celebrations will feature a range of cultural performances across multiple venues. On the opening day, singer Sona Mohapatra will perform at Gandhi Maidan, while classical vocalist Pandit Jagat Narayan Pathak will present a Dhrupad recital at Shri Krishna Memorial Hall.

Dance performances, including Odissi presentations, and folk music events are also scheduled, along with a staging of Bhikhari Thakur’s play Gabarghichor.
On March 23, singer Shaan will perform, alongside a dance-drama based on the Buddhacharita. A humour poetry event featuring Surendra Sharma and a theatre production titled Vaijayanti are also part of the programme.
The final day will see a performance by singer Papon at Gandhi Maidan.
Wider celebrations
Additional events include screenings of classic films such as Nadiya Ke Paar and Teesri Kasam, and a women’s theatre festival at Premchand Rangshala from March 22 to 26.

Officials said the celebrations will also highlight initiatives aimed at empowering women and marginalised communities through cultural platforms.
Bihar Diwas marks the formation of the state on March 22, 1912, when it was carved out of the Bengal Presidency.
