Patna: Nitish Kumar has been elected unopposed as the national president of the Janata Dal (United) for the fourth time, reaffirming his position as the party’s central figure.
The deadline for withdrawal of nominations expired on Monday morning, leaving Nitish as the sole candidate. A formal announcement is expected later in the day at the party’s national headquarters in New Delhi, where senior leaders are set to be present.
Nitish had filed his nomination on March 19 at the party’s central office on Jantar Mantar Road. The papers were submitted on his behalf by the party’s working president, Sanjay Kumar Jha, to the returning officer Anil Hegde.
His re-election marks a continuation of a leadership role he first assumed in 2016 after succeeding Sharad Yadav. He was re-elected unopposed in 2019, before handing over the position briefly to RCP Singh in 2020 and later to Lalan Singh. Nitish returned to the post in 2023 following Singh’s resignation.
The development comes as the JD(U) prepares for meetings of its national executive and national council, scheduled to be held in Patna on March 29, where organisational matters and future strategy are expected to be discussed.
Political observers say Nitish’s continued leadership reflects both his enduring influence within the party and the absence of a comparable figure capable of uniting its ranks. His leadership is also seen as crucial in maintaining organisational cohesion amid reports of internal dissent.
Analysts suggest that projecting Nitish at the national level could help the JD(U) expand its footprint beyond Bihar, while also consolidating its existing support base.
The move is also viewed in the context of broader alliance politics, with Nitish remaining a key face for the party and its electoral strategy in Bihar.
