Patna: The Bihar government is planning to create its first-ever database of migrant workers, alongside establishing a dedicated call centre in Patna to provide assistance to labourers working across the country.
Officials said a tender has already been issued for the call centre, which will operate through a toll-free number. Once the bidding process is completed—submissions are open until 21 April—workers from any state will be able to access support services by calling the helpline.
The initiative is being led by the state’s Department of Labour Resources and Migrant Worker Welfare, which is also developing a mobile application to compile and manage the database. The app, currently undergoing a security audit, will link workers’ details with their Aadhaar numbers. Authorities say the data collection process will begin once the audit is complete.
According to department officials, the scheme marks the first comprehensive attempt to systematically document migrant workers from Bihar. The database is expected to enable quicker access to information and improve response mechanisms in emergencies or welfare-related situations.
Efforts to register migrant workers in the state have previously faltered, with earlier initiatives left incomplete. The new plan will start afresh, incorporating Aadhaar-linked data to build a more reliable system.
Earlier proposals to establish migrant worker assistance centres were also abandoned midway. The current initiative, officials say, aims to address those gaps and create a more structured support system for Bihar’s migrant workforce.
