Patna: Two major cultural infrastructure projects in Bihar — Bapu Tower and the Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum & Smriti Stupa — have been selected for the 17th CIDC Vishwakarma Awards 2026 under the “Best Construction Projects” category.
The recognition is being seen as a significant endorsement of the state’s push to combine modern engineering with cultural preservation, with both projects executed by the Building Construction Department.
Kumar Ravi, secretary of the department, described the selection as a “moment of immense pride”, attributing it to the technical expertise and dedication of engineers, architects and the broader project teams. He added that Bihar is increasingly setting new benchmarks in architecture and construction, helping shape a distinct identity on the national and global stage.
The department has previously received similar recognition for projects such as the Samrat Ashok Convention Centre and Anjuman Islamia Hall.
Located in Gardanibagh in Patna, Bapu Tower is dedicated to the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. The museum uses audio-visual installations, murals, sculptures and short films to narrate Gandhi’s journey and his association with Bihar, positioning itself as both an educational space and a major tourist attraction.
In Vaishali, the Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum & Smriti Stupa has been developed across a 72-acre premises to preserve sacred relics associated with the Buddha and serve as a pilgrimage destination. Built using sandstone from Rajasthan’s Banshi Paharpur, the structure incorporates modern seismic-resistant engineering designed for long-term durability.
The complex includes a museum, library, visitor centre and amphitheatre, and has emerged as a focal point for Buddhist pilgrims from India and abroad since its inauguration in July 2025.
Officials said the projects reflect the broader vision of chief minister Nitish Kumar to promote infrastructure development while preserving Bihar’s historical and cultural heritage, with tourism expected to receive a further boost through such initiatives.
