Patna: Bihar has recorded its highest-ever tax collection of Rs 43,324.79 crore in the financial year 2025–26, marking a 4.09% increase over the previous year, state officials said on Thursday.
Announcing the figures at Kar Bhawan in Patna, commercial taxes minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav said the collections include revenue from GST, VAT and other taxes. The state had collected Rs 41,623.96 crore in 2024–25.
Of the total, Rs 32,801 crore was generated through Goods and Services Tax (GST), reflecting an 11.7% rise compared with the previous year. However, after a deduction of Rs 724 crore by the central government to adjust IGST balances, the state’s net GST collection stood at Rs 32,077.22 crore.
Despite the adjustment, Bihar recorded a 9.2% growth in GST collections — higher than the national average of around 6% — placing it fourth among states in terms of growth, the minister said.
Officials noted that the figures are provisional and may increase further once professional tax data is fully accounted for.
The department also reported a 10.6% rise in overall cash collections — including SGST, CGST, IGST and cess — in 2025–26 compared with the previous year, second only to Karnataka among states.
Yadav said the performance was notable given the reduction in GST rates on several consumer goods in September 2025 and the conduct of assembly elections during the year.
In March 2026 alone, Bihar recorded a 13% growth in GST collections compared with the same month last year, significantly above the national growth rate of 5%.
Non-GST Revenue And Key Sources
The state generated Rs 11,247.57 crore through non-GST sources, including Rs 10,037.38 crore from VAT on petrol and diesel, Rs 983.81 crore from electricity duty, and Rs 226.38 crore from professional tax.
Registration Department Exceeds Target
The state’s registration department also surpassed its revenue target, collecting Rs 8,403.46 crore against a target of Rs 8,250 crore — achieving 101.86% of the goal.
Yadav, who also oversees the prohibition, excise and registration department, said the achievement came despite a decline of 1.87 lakh in the number of registered documents. The department recorded a 9.8% increase in revenue compared with 2024–25.
Patna emerged as the top-performing district, generating Rs 1,506.15 crore — 110.63% of its target. Other high-performing districts included Arwal, Aurangabad, Banka and Sheohar.
Among registry offices, Danapur led with 134% of its revenue target, followed by Rajauli (130%), Patna City (119%), Vikram (118%) and Dehri-on-Sone (117.3%).
Officials said the figures reflect improved tax compliance and administrative efficiency, contributing to the state’s overall revenue growth.
