Patna: An international wrestling tournament held in Bihar’s Mokama region saw 101 wrestlers from India and abroad compete for a total prize purse of Rs 51 lakh, with several high-profile bouts drawing large crowds.
The event, organised in Nadwan village under the leadership of JD(U) MLA Anant Singh, was held on Friday to mark the death anniversary of wrestler Viveka Pehalwan. Organisers said participants included competitors from countries such as Iran and Georgia, alongside Indian wrestlers from multiple states.
Among the notable contests, an Indian wrestler defeated an Iranian opponent in a series of bouts held during the event. In another match, a wrestler from Georgia secured victory over Rohit, a competitor from Delhi. Shiva, a wrestler from Maharashtra, also defeated Jalal of Iran in a closely watched encounter.
Officials said the tournament brought together 101 participants and that the total prize money of Rs 51 lakh was distributed among them, reflecting the scale of the competition.
The event attracted an estimated crowd of around 10,000 people. Security and basic amenities, including food and refreshments for visitors, were arranged at the venue.
Anant Singh attended the event with his son and walked around the wrestling arena during the matches. His presence drew significant public attention alongside the sporting action.
Bhojpuri singer Gunjan Singh also performed at the gathering, with audiences joining in as music played during the event.
The tournament also served as a tribute to Viveka Pehalwan, remembered locally for his discipline and achievements in wrestling, including the ‘Bihar Kesari’ title. He is described by relatives as having followed a rigorous training regime.
The event comes amid heightened public attention on Singh following his recent release on bail from the Patna high court, marking one of his first major public appearances since.
