Patna: Patna is set to get Bihar’s first LPG-based crematorium at Digha Ghat, in a move aimed at modernising funeral services and reducing environmental impact.
An agreement for the project was signed between the Patna Municipal Corporation and Isha Outreach, an initiative of the Isha Foundation, in the presence of mayor Sita Sahu and municipal commissioner Yashpal Meena.
Officials said the state government has allotted 2.11 acres of land for the project on a nominal lease of Re 1 for a period of 33 years, enabling faster implementation.
The proposed crematorium complex will include four LPG furnaces, a waiting hall, an administrative building and a temple, along with landscaped surroundings and other basic amenities.
Mayor Sahu said the system would respect traditional rituals, with initial rites conducted as per custom before cremation is carried out using LPG, supplemented by limited use of wood.
Authorities said the initiative is expected to reduce dependence on firewood, making the cremation process cleaner, faster and more organised, while offering improved facilities for grieving families.
Municipal commissioner Meena said Isha Outreach will be responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the facility.
Officials added that similar LPG-based crematoriums are planned in other districts, including Gaya, Saran, Saharsa, Bhagalpur and Begusarai, as part of a broader push towards environmentally sustainable infrastructure in the state.
