Patna: Indian Railways is set to undertake a series of major infrastructure projects in Bihar, with a proposed Rs 495 crore coaching depot at Fatuha emerging as a key component of the expansion plan.
The proposal for the modern depot has been submitted to the Railway Board and is aimed at strengthening maintenance capacity and supporting the growing number of trains operating in the region.
Fatuha depot and new coaching facilities
Officials said the Fatuha coaching depot would be equipped with modern facilities to handle increased rail traffic and improve operational efficiency.
In addition, plans are under consideration to establish a new coaching complex for trains on the Gaya route, with Biharsharif and Sheikhpura being evaluated as potential locations.
Station redevelopment under Amrit Bharat scheme
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 22 railway stations across Bihar will be redeveloped at a cost exceeding Rs 513 crore.
The upgrades are expected to enhance passenger amenities, improve station infrastructure and modernise facilities.
Network expansion to ease congestion
Railway authorities are also focusing on increasing network capacity through:
- Third and fourth rail lines between Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction and Jhajha
- A double rail bridge over the Ganges at Mokama, expected to be operational by June
These projects are aimed at reducing congestion and improving train movement across key corridors.
New lines and train services
Recent developments include the completion of the Asthawan–Sarasa Jamalpur rail line, enabling services on the Biharsharif–Sheikhpura route.
Railways have also introduced 52 new trains, including premium services such as Namo Bharat, Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat, while stoppages have been increased at 77 stations.
To meet rising demand, 518 pairs of special trains have been operated and 2,262 additional coaches deployed.
Revenue and passenger services
The Danapur division reported revenue exceeding Rs 2,362 crore in the 2025–26 financial year, reflecting increased passenger and freight activity.
Officials also said stricter enforcement against ticketless travel has led to higher penalty collections.
Focus on passenger experience
Alongside infrastructure expansion, efforts are under way to improve station environments through the installation of lifts and escalators, enhanced cleanliness, increased greenery and the adoption of solar energy.
Railway officials said the combined push on infrastructure and services is expected to significantly improve connectivity and commuter experience across Bihar.
