Patna: The Bihar Police has issued a high alert over a new wave of cyber fraud in which scammers are impersonating census officials to target unsuspecting residents across the state.
Officials said fraudsters are contacting people through phone calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages, claiming to assist with self-enumeration or government benefits under the ongoing census process.
Fake Links Used To Steal Money
According to the police, victims are sent malicious links under the pretext of completing census formalities. Once clicked, these links can compromise mobile devices and expose banking details.
Several complaints have been reported from Patna, Muzaffarpur and other districts.
In one instance, a resident of Patna lost Rs 25,000, while another victim in Muzaffarpur reported a loss of Rs 10,000 after clicking on such a link.
Rural Areas Particularly Targeted
Authorities said cybercriminals are increasingly focusing on rural areas, where awareness of digital fraud remains relatively low.
Scammers often threaten victims by claiming their government benefits will be stopped unless they complete “self-enumeration” immediately, prompting panic-driven responses.
Government Issues Clarification
Officials associated with the census process have clarified that no government agency seeks personal or banking details through calls or messages.
Citizens have been advised to use only the official census self-enumeration portal for submitting information.
Advisory And Helpline
The cyber unit has urged people not to click on unknown links or share sensitive information such as OTPs or banking credentials.
In case of suspected fraud, residents have been asked to report incidents immediately through the national cyber helpline (1930) or via the official cybercrime reporting portal.
Investigation Under Way
Police said multiple complaints are under investigation and efforts are being made to track those involved.
Authorities have reiterated that vigilance and awareness remain the most effective safeguards against such scams.
