Patna: A sudden spell of thunderstorms, squalls and heavy rain swept across Bihar on Wednesday evening, prompting the meteorological department to issue a red alert for several districts, including Patna.
The Patna Meteorological Centre warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail and gusty winds of 50–60 kmph until 9pm.
Districts Under Alert
The affected districts include Saran, Siwan, West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Buxar, Bhojpur, Muzaffarpur, Jehanabad, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Saharsa and Supaul, among others.
Officials said dark clouds and dust-laden winds caused visibility to drop sharply, with several areas experiencing near-darkness by late afternoon.
Rain, Damage And Disruptions
Heavy rainfall was reported in at least 15 districts, including Jamui, Siwan and Bhojpur.
In Buxar, a tree fell onto an e-rickshaw during strong winds, injuring six passengers, though all sustained minor injuries. Another tree collapse damaged a roadside shop near Station Road.
Statewide Alerts
The meteorological department has issued alerts for all 38 districts, including orange alerts for 19 districts and yellow alerts for another 19, warning of thunderstorms, rain and lightning strikes.
Pre-Monsoon Activity Intensifies
Officials said pre-monsoon activity is intensifying across the state, leading to a sharp change in weather patterns.
These conditions are expected to continue until May 3, with temperatures likely to drop by 1–3°C, offering some relief from the ongoing heatwave.

Residents have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open areas during lightning and take precautions against strong winds.
Authorities said emergency services are on alert to respond to any weather-related incidents.
