Munger: The Bihar government has announced plans to build a new city, to be known as Ang Township, in Munger, in a move officials say is aimed at reshaping the region’s economic and urban landscape.
The proposed development will span land across 55 villages and is intended to function as a self-sustaining urban centre, with infrastructure including schools, hospitals, parks and an integrated road network. Authorities say the township is designed not just as a residential project but as a broader development hub to strengthen social and economic activity in and around Munger.
The site has been identified across a belt linking Jamalpur, Bariarpur, Haveli Kharagpur and Asarganj, with planners citing its central location as key to ensuring balanced regional development. The intention is to enable nearby towns and rural communities to directly benefit from improved infrastructure and services, reducing dependence on larger urban centres.
According to preliminary plans, the project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, described as the “core area”, will cover around 1,016 acres and house administrative, commercial and residential zones. The second phase, a larger “special zone”, will extend over approximately 6,750 acres, incorporating land from multiple villages and accommodating long-term expansion.
Connectivity is expected to be a central feature of the township. Officials say four major four-lane highways will link the area to key routes connecting Mirzachauki, Deoghar, Sultanganj and Haldia. In addition, a proposed airport near Sultanganj, around 20–25km from the site, is expected to enhance regional accessibility and support trade, tourism and industry.
The government has positioned Ang Township as a model for future urban development in eastern India. If implemented as planned, the project could attract investment, create jobs and significantly improve living standards in the region, potentially establishing Munger as an emerging urban hub within the state.
