Patna: Authorities have ordered a crackdown on unsafe boating practices following the recent incident at the Jabalpur Dam, with officials directing strict enforcement against overloading and unregistered vessels.
District magistrate Dr Thiyagarajan S M instructed officials to ensure that all boats operating in the region comply with registration norms and safety standards, warning that violations would attract legal action.
Strict Enforcement Ordered
Directives have been issued to sub-divisional officers and police officials to monitor operations closely and take action against those found exceeding passenger limits or operating illegally.
Officials said the administration has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards any compromise on public safety, particularly in the wake of the recent accident.
Registration And Safety Norms Mandatory
Authorities reiterated that all boats must be registered and adhere to prescribed operational guidelines, including carrying capacity and availability of safety equipment such as life jackets.
Boat registrations are granted only after inspection by a motor vehicle inspector, officials said, adding that non-compliant operators would be identified and penalised.
The district transport officer and other officials have been tasked with ensuring enforcement, including checking whether boats meet safety requirements before and during operations.
Public Urged To Remain Vigilant
The administration has also appealed to passengers to exercise caution while using boat services. Residents have been advised not to board vessels that appear overloaded and to report violations to local authorities, including police stations and sub-divisional offices.
Circle officers have been directed to maintain continuous supervision of boat operations to ensure compliance across the district.
Officials said the measures are aimed at preventing further incidents and ensuring safer waterways for the public.
