Patna: A school student died and another was rescued after the two began drowning in the Ganga at Janardan Ghat in the Digha area of Patna on Sunday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Harsh, a resident of Khajpura under the Airport police station limits, while the rescued student, Amy, is a Class 9 pupil.
Incident At River Ghat
According to officials, the two students left their homes around 9am without informing their families and went to Janardan Ghat to bathe in the river. While in the water, they reportedly misjudged the depth and began to struggle.
People present at the ghat raised an alarm and alerted emergency services as the students were seen drowning.
Rescue Efforts
Local residents managed to pull Amy out of the river after a sustained effort. However, Harsh was swept into deeper waters and disappeared from sight.
A team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with trained divers, was deployed to search for the missing student.
Body Recovered After Search
After a search operation lasting around two hours, Harsh’s body was recovered from the river. Police said the body has been sent for postmortem examination.
Eyewitnesses said timely intervention by locals helped save the second student, warning that the situation could have been more severe without immediate rescue efforts.
The incident has left families and residents in shock, with police urging caution while entering rivers, particularly at unfamiliar or deeper stretches.
