Patna: Rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds continued to sweep across Bihar, bringing relief from heat but triggering weather alerts across all 38 districts, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather department has issued an orange alert for 19 districts and a yellow alert for the remaining 19, warning of strong winds that may reach speeds of up to 60 km/h in several areas on Monday. The ongoing pre-monsoon activity has led to a noticeable drop in temperatures, with most districts currently recording maximum temperatures between 34°C and 38°C.
Heavy rainfall was reported in Motihari, Bettiah, and Begusarai over the past 24 hours, particularly on Sunday. Light showers were also recorded in Siwan and Gopalganj, while districts including Patna, Buxar, and Chhapra witnessed overcast skies throughout the day.
The IMD has forecast that the pleasant weather conditions—marked by intermittent sunshine, cloud cover, and rainfall—are likely to persist until May 6. After this period, temperatures are expected to gradually rise, signalling the return of hotter conditions.
In its latest advisory, the IMD has also warned of possible hailstorms in parts of Bihar and neighbouring Jharkhand on May 4. Farmers and residents have been advised to remain cautious, avoid open areas during thunderstorms, and take necessary precautions against lightning and strong winds.
Meteorologists attribute the current weather pattern to active pre-monsoon conditions. Moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are increasing humidity levels across the state, while the influence of a western disturbance is causing atmospheric instability. Additionally, localised interactions between heat and moisture are leading to rapid cloud formation, resulting in thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
In Patna, the forecast indicates cloudy skies with chances of light rain and strong winds during the day. Humidity levels are expected to remain high, but the intensity of heat will stay relatively subdued due to lower temperatures. Thunderstorms accompanied by rain are likely during the evening or night.
According to the IMD, this weather pattern may continue across Bihar until May 7, with thunderstorms and rainfall expected in different regions, potentially lowering temperatures by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. However, conditions are expected to clear gradually after May 6, with a steady rise in temperature and the possibility of intense heat returning in the following days.
