Bhagalpur/Patna: A section of the Vikramshila Setu collapsed into the Ganges late on Sunday night, forcing authorities to shut down the bridge and halt all traffic between Bhagalpur and Naugachhia.
Officials said the incident occurred around 1am when a large slab near pillar number 133 gave way, creating a sudden gap in the roadway. No casualties were reported.
Swift Action Averts Disaster
Traffic personnel stationed on the bridge responded quickly after noticing the developing crack, alerting senior officials and immediately stopping vehicles from entering the affected stretch.
Witnesses said several vehicles were on the bridge at the time, but were swiftly moved away from the danger zone moments before the slab collapsed into the river.
Officials said the prompt response helped prevent a potentially major accident.
Bridge Sealed, Traffic Diverted
Following the collapse, authorities sealed the bridge from both ends and erected barricades to prevent movement.
District magistrate Naval Kishore Chaudhary confirmed that traffic has been completely prohibited on the structure and advised commuters to use alternative routes.
Police said vehicles are being diverted via Munger and Sultanganj, a longer but safer route for travel between Bhagalpur and north Bihar.
Investigation Under Way
Senior superintendent of police Pramod Yadav said additional personnel have been deployed to manage traffic and maintain security in the area.
A team of engineers and technical experts is expected to inspect the site to determine the cause of the collapse, including whether it resulted from structural weakness or construction flaws.
Impact On Connectivity
The Vikramshila Setu is a key link between north and south Bihar, carrying thousands of vehicles daily. Its closure is expected to disrupt transport, trade and supply chains in the region.
Authorities said nearby sections of the bridge will also be examined to assess safety risks, and a timeline for repairs and reopening will be decided after a detailed technical assessment.
Officials have urged the public to avoid the bridge entirely, warning that even pedestrian movement could be unsafe until further notice.
