Patna: Jhanjharpur MLA Nitish Mishra formally assumed charge as Bihar’s Urban Development and Housing Minister on Friday at Vikas Bhawan, outlining an ambitious roadmap focused on urban infrastructure, civic services and the development of satellite townships across the state.
The minister was welcomed by department’s principal secretary, Vinay Kumar, who briefed him on the department’s ongoing schemes and projects.
Focus On Urban Expansion And Infrastructure
After taking charge, Mishra reviewed various departmental initiatives and said improving basic infrastructure facilities in urban local bodies would remain the government’s top priority.
He noted that Bihar’s urbanisation level had reached nearly 17% in recent years and stressed the need for a “systematic and visionary” approach to urban growth.
“Cities reflect the governance and development of a state,” Mishra said, adding that visitors often judge Bihar’s progress through cities such as Patna and other urban centres.
He said the department would provide institutional support and “hand-holding” assistance to all 264 urban local bodies in the state to improve local governance and service delivery.
Satellite Townships Among Top Priorities
The minister said land and locations had already been identified for the 11 satellite townships proposed by the state cabinet.
He described the township initiative as a major long-term project aimed at accelerating urban development in Bihar.
According to Mishra, the government is also examining an additional urban development proposal linked to Rohtas.
He said master plans for urban areas would be prepared keeping in mind infrastructure and civic requirements for the next 50 years.
Waste Management, Surveillance And Civic Services
Mishra said the department would continue strengthening waste management systems, sanitation, electricity infrastructure, city surveillance networks and modern civic amenities across Bihar’s urban areas.
He added that fulfilling public expectations remained his foremost responsibility.
“May God grant me the strength to live up to the expectations of the people of Bihar with complete dedication and integrity,” he said.
Senior officials present during the charge-taking ceremony included Secretary Sandeep R Pudkalakatti, Patna divisional commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar, special secretary Rajiv Kumar Srivastava and additional secretary Vijay Prakash Meena.
