Patna: A modern two-lane truss bridge will be constructed alongside the historic Vikramshila Setu in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, as authorities move to maintain uninterrupted traffic flow during the repair of the existing bridge across the Ganges.
The proposed structure, expected to stretch nearly four kilometres, will serve as an alternative route while restoration work is carried out on the ageing Vikramshila Setu, one of Bihar’s most important transport links. Officials said the project will be executed under the supervision of the Border Roads Organisation.
Engineers associated with the National Highways Authority said the bridge would be built using advanced truss technology and a “well foundation” system designed to withstand the strong currents and heavy structural load of the river. Under the method, large concrete pillars will be sunk deep into the Ganges riverbed to provide stability and long-term durability.
The bridge’s steel truss framework will rely on a triangular design intended to distribute weight evenly across the structure. Engineers say the geometry improves strength and balance, making truss bridges particularly effective in difficult terrain and emergency infrastructure projects.
Authorities also plan to use prefabricated steel panels to speed up construction. Different sections of the bridge will be manufactured off-site before being transported and assembled using cranes and heavy machinery, a process expected to reduce construction time and improve precision.
A reinforced steel or concrete deck will be laid on top of the structure to support vehicular traffic, while a separate pedestrian walkway is also planned. Officials said the bridge is being designed not merely as a temporary diversion, but as a long-term infrastructure asset for the region.
Experts noted that while the technology shares similarities with truss-based foot-over bridges commonly seen at railway stations, the scale and load-bearing capacity of the proposed structure will be significantly greater. Such bridges are often used to establish alternative transport routes quickly during emergencies and natural disasters.
The Vikramshila Setu remains a critical connection for Bhagalpur and several neighbouring districts, carrying thousands of vehicles daily. The proposed parallel bridge is therefore being viewed as a strategic infrastructure project aimed at preventing major traffic disruption during the rehabilitation of the existing crossing.
Officials said the final cost of the project would be determined after the design receives formal approval. The state government and engineering teams expressed confidence that the bridge would strengthen regional connectivity and improve transport infrastructure in the long term.
