Darbhanga: Darbhanga Airport has entered a new phase of security as the Central Industrial Security Force officially took over protection duties at the airport, marking a major development for Bihar’s aviation network. The change was announced during a formal ceremony held inside the airport campus, where senior government officials and Bihar deputy chief minister Samrat Chaudhary were present. The inclusion of Darbhanga under CISF protection makes it the 72nd airport in India to receive this high-level security cover and the third airport in Bihar after Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport and Gaya Airport.
Authorities said 145 CISF personnel have been deployed in the first phase to manage the airport’s security operations. Darbhanga’s location near the international border with Nepal has made it an important area from a strategic point of view. Security agencies have often raised concerns about illegal cross-border activities, including smuggling and drone movement, which have increased the need for stronger surveillance. Officials believe the CISF deployment will create a more secure environment for both passengers and the surrounding region.
The airport functions as a civil enclave inside the campus of the Indian Air Force station, which already makes it a highly sensitive zone. With CISF taking charge, all passenger checks, baggage scanning, access control and emergency security responses will now be handled by the force. Along with regular personnel, special security units have also been assigned. These include a Quick Response Team, Bomb Disposal Squad and trained dog squad to detect explosives. Officials said the addition of these units is aimed at preparing the airport for modern security threats and ensuring immediate response during emergencies.
Since its launch under the UDAN Scheme, Darbhanga Airport has grown quickly into one of Bihar’s most important transport centres. The airport has significantly improved connectivity for people in the Mithila region and nearby districts, reducing travel time to major cities across India. Passenger traffic has increased every year, helping local trade, creating employment and encouraging economic growth. Speaking at the event, Samrat Chaudhary said there would be no compromise on security and that the deployment reflects the government’s focus on strengthening vital infrastructure in sensitive areas. CISF director general Praveer Ranjan said the force would work to ensure passengers feel safe while supporting the airport’s continued expansion.
