Rohtas/Patna: A traffic police constable died after being hit by a sand-laden tractor while on duty in Rohtas district, police said on Sunday.
The incident took place near SP Jain College turn in Sasaram when the constable was attempting to stop a heavy vehicle from entering a restricted zone during no-entry hours.
The injured constable, identified as Mukesh Kumar, was initially taken to Sasaram Sadar hospital before being referred to BHU trauma centre in Varanasi, where he later died during treatment. He was a resident of Lakhisarai district.
Incident during enforcement drive
According to Rohtas superintendent of police Roshan Kumar, heavy vehicles are prohibited from operating in the Sasaram Nagar police station area between 7am and 9pm to ensure smooth traffic movement.
“Traffic personnel are deployed at SP Jain turn to enforce the prohibition on heavy vehicles. During checking, constable Mukesh Kumar stopped a tractor from entering the area. During this process, the incident occurred due to the criminal negligence of the tractor driver,” the SP said.
Further legal action is being taken in the case, he said.
Police allege negligence by driver
The SP said Mukesh Kumar, who was posted at the spot, tried to stop a tractor from entering the no-entry zone when the incident occurred. The tractor driver acted negligently and drove the vehicle into the constable, leaving him critically injured.
