Muzaffarpur/Patna: Despite a decline in production this year, Muzaffarpur’s Shahi litchi is witnessing high demand in metropolitan markets including Delhi and Mumbai.
The premium fruit from Bihar has also become available on select online quick-commerce and grocery platforms, allowing consumers in urban centres to order it directly to their homes.
Traders said demand for the variety remains high due to its taste, aroma and limited seasonal availability.
Prices rise amid lower production
The fall in production has affected availability across retail and online markets.
On select online platforms, 500 grams of Shahi litchi is currently being sold for between Rs. 170 and Rs. 200. Market sources said prices vary depending on packaging, with bunches containing leaves and stems often costing up to Rs. 50 more than standard packed fruit.
In Mumbai’s retail markets, high-quality Shahi litchi is reportedly being sold at prices ranging from RS. 300 to Rs. 400 per kilogram.
Supply to metros continues through rail network
Despite lower output, shipments of litchi from Muzaffarpur to major cities are continuing on a daily basis.
Traders said around four to five tonnes of litchi are being sent to Mumbai every day.
On Thursday, a large consignment was booked from Muzaffarpur Junction for Maharashtra. Railway officials said four tonnes were dispatched through the SLR coach of the Pawan Express, while an additional 2.5 tonnes were sent to Panvel through the Amrit Bharat Express.
Daily dispatches to Delhi and other cities
Apart from Mumbai, consignments are also being transported regularly to Delhi and other cities through major train routes.
Officials and traders said shipments are being maintained to ensure continued supply in metropolitan markets during the peak litchi season.
