Muzaffarpur/Patna:The Muzaffarpur district administration has restricted the movement of heavy vehicles on four bridges identified as structurally weak following a technical assessment by the Road Construction Department and IIT Patna.

Officials said trucks, buses and other heavy commercial vehicles will no longer be allowed to use the bridges until repair and strengthening work is completed.

The decision comes amid increased scrutiny of bridge safety in Bihar following recent concerns over infrastructure conditions in different parts of the state.

Bridges placed under restriction

The bridges where restrictions have been imposed include the Dadar bridge over the Burhi Gandak river, the Maripur rail overbridge, a bridge on the Deoria-Baruraj route, and another on the Deoria-Jafarpur-Ambara road.

The Maripur rail overbridge is considered one of the city’s key transport links and is used daily by thousands of commuters.

Technical inspection flagged concerns

According to officials, a joint inspection conducted by engineers from the Road Construction Department and IIT Patna found significant deterioration in the structures.

The report recommended restricting heavy vehicular movement until repairs are carried out to avoid further stress on the bridges.

Following the recommendations, the district administration directed authorities to install barriers and enforce no-entry restrictions for heavy vehicles near the affected bridges.

Repair plans under way

Officials said approximately Rs. 4.5 crore is expected to be spent on the repair and restoration of the Maripur rail overbridge, while a separate proposal worth around Rs Four crore has been prepared for the Dadar bridge.

The administration said repair work would begin shortly to improve structural safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

Traffic diversions implemented

Traffic arrangements have also been revised following the restrictions.

Heavy vehicles travelling towards the Maripur overbridge are being diverted through alternative routes, while trucks and buses heading towards the Dadar bridge have been redirected via the national highway.

Separate diversion plans have also been introduced for vehicles travelling towards Deoria and Ambara. Small vehicles and two-wheelers are currently allowed to continue using the bridges.
