Patna: Construction of the Danapur-Bihta Elevated Road has gathered pace, with authorities targeting June 2027 for the commencement of vehicular traffic on the nearly 25-km-long four-lane corridor.
The project, estimated to cost around Rs 1,969 crore, is among the key road infrastructure initiatives currently under development in and around Patna. Once completed, it is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Patna city and Bihta while reducing travel delays caused by heavy traffic on the existing route.
One of the Longest Elevated Urban Corridors
The Danapur-Bihta Elevated Road is being developed as part of the broader Patna-Buxar Four-Lane Project (NH-922). The corridor is expected to emerge as one of the longest elevated urban highways in the country.
A major objective of the project is to provide seamless connectivity between Patna and the upcoming Bihta Civil Enclave airport. The elevated alignment will allow vehicles to bypass local traffic congestion, resulting in faster and more efficient travel.
Access Points and Traffic Management Measures
To facilitate smooth movement of both local and through traffic, ramps and loops are planned at four strategic locations along the corridor. These include areas near Danapur Railway Station, Shivala Mor, the Bihta Airport Link, and the Bihta-Sarmera Bypass.
Officials say these access points will help distribute traffic efficiently while maintaining uninterrupted movement on the elevated section.
Four Bypasses Planned Along the Route
The project also includes the construction of four major bypasses at Neuraganj, Painal, Kanhauli and Bishunpura.
These bypasses are intended to reduce congestion on existing roads and ensure smoother travel for long-distance commuters using the corridor. Local traffic at ground level is also expected to benefit from reduced vehicle pressure once the elevated road becomes operational.
Travel Time to Be Reduced
According to project estimates, the corridor will help shorten travel time for vehicles travelling from Patna towards Uttar Pradesh and Delhi by approximately two hours.
The improved road network is expected to enhance regional connectivity and support faster movement of passengers and goods along the route.
Boost for Educational and Airport Connectivity
The project is also expected to benefit major educational institutions located in the Bihta region, including IIT Patna and NIT Patna.
Commuters travelling between Patna city and these institutions are likely to experience shorter and more predictable travel times after the corridor opens.
Authorities have also stated that the construction agency will remain responsible for the road’s maintenance and upkeep for a period of 10 years after completion, a provision aimed at ensuring long-term quality and operational standards.
