Patna: The first phase of the Digha Vending Zone near the Digha Roundabout has been completed, marking a key step in the Patna Municipal Corporation’s plan to make JP Ganga Path, commonly known as Marine Drive, free of roadside vending and encroachments.
The newly developed vending zone is expected to accommodate more than 250 vendors currently operating along roadsides in the area. Municipal authorities plan to shift these vendors to the designated site in the coming weeks.
Phase I Development Work Completed
The vending zone has been developed over approximately 55,000 square feet between Atal Path and the railway overbridge near the Digha Roundabout.
According to officials, site development work has been largely completed, including ground levelling, installation of paver blocks, and construction of a drainage network to support long-term operations.
50 Pre-Fabricated Shops Established
As part of the first phase, around 50 pre-fabricated shops have been constructed within the vending zone.
The shops are designed to provide vendors with a structured and secure business environment while reducing the unregulated occupation of public spaces along major roads.
Space Allocated for More Than 250 Vendors
Beyond the pre-fabricated units, the vending zone has been planned to accommodate over 250 vendors in total.
Officials said the facility will provide designated business spaces for vendors who currently operate from temporary roadside setups, helping improve urban management while supporting livelihoods.
Traffic Relief Expected Along Marine Drive
Authorities expect the project to ease traffic congestion around the Digha Roundabout and JP Ganga Path.
Dedicated parking arrangements within the vending zone are intended to prevent vehicles from being parked on roadsides, a factor that has often contributed to traffic bottlenecks in the area.
Move Towards a Vending-Free Marine Drive
The relocation initiative forms part of a broader effort to keep JP Ganga Path free from roadside encroachments and informal vending activity.
Municipal officials said vendors operating along footpaths and road margins will be shifted to designated vending zones to ensure smoother traffic movement and better utilisation of public spaces.
Commercial and Entertainment Hub Planned
The Patna Municipal Corporation has outlined plans to expand the facility into a larger commercial and recreational destination.
Future phases are expected to include a foot overbridge, modern parking facilities, public restrooms, and drinking water stations.
Officials also plan to develop a landscaped park and an entertainment zone within the complex, creating a space that combines shopping, leisure, and public amenities for residents and visitors.
