Gaya/Patna:Work on the Dungeshwari ropeway project near Bodh Gaya is progressing rapidly, with the first phase expected to be inaugurated within the next month.
The project, being developed at an estimated cost of Rs. 16 crore, aims to improve access to the Dungeshwari Temple, a prominent religious and tourist site in the region.
Easier access for pilgrims and visitors
At present, visitors to the temple must navigate steep and rocky pathways to reach the hilltop shrine. The journey can be particularly challenging for elderly and physically unwell pilgrims, many of whom rely on assistance to make the climb.
Officials expect the ropeway to provide a safer and more convenient alternative for visitors once operations begin.
Capacity and route
The ropeway will feature four cabins, allowing up to 12 passengers to travel uphill and 12 passengers downhill at a time.
The system will cover a distance of approximately 309 metres and is being developed in two phases.
Under the first phase, visitors will be able to travel directly from the base of the hill to the Dungeshwari Temple. The second phase will extend the service from the temple to the highest point of the hill.
Trial run pending
Shashi Bhushan, Junior Engineer in the Tourism Department, said construction of the first section is largely complete and only technical testing remains.
He said the facility would be opened to the public after successful completion of the trial run.
Construction of the second section is expected to take several more months. Three towers have already been installed, while work on three additional towers is ongoing.
Tourism facilities under development
Alongside the ropeway, a tourist facility centre is also being developed within the project area.
The centre is expected to provide amenities for domestic and international visitors, with the aim of improving the overall tourism experience at Dungeshwari.
Boost for tourism in the Bodh Gaya region
Officials believe the project will strengthen religious tourism at Dungeshwari and contribute to broader tourism development in the Bodh Gaya region.
News of the proposed launch of ropeway services from July has generated interest among local residents and visitors. According to locals, the foundation for the project was laid in 2021.
