Patna: After days of thunderstorms and rainfall brought relief from humid conditions across Bihar, the state is once again witnessing a rise in temperatures as weather activity weakens and dry conditions prevail.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), intense heat is likely to affect five districts on Wednesday—Kaimur, Rohtas (Dehri), Aurangabad, Gaya, and Patna. While no heatwave alert has been issued, maximum temperatures in these districts may reach up to 43 degrees Celsius.
On Tuesday, Kaimur (Bhabua) emerged as the hottest location in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 41.4 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in Dehri, Bhagalpur, and Sheikhpura also hovered around the 40-degree mark. Meanwhile, isolated weather activity continued in some areas, with thunderstorms and rainfall reported in Sasaram and Gaya, while cloudy conditions prevailed in Buxar and Aurangabad.
Why Is the Heat Increasing Again?
Weather experts have identified three key reasons behind the renewed rise in temperatures across Bihar:
Weakening Rainfall and Thunderstorm Activity: Several districts experienced pre-monsoon showers during the last week of May and the beginning of June, leading to a temporary drop in temperatures. However, with rainfall activity declining and weather conditions turning dry, temperatures are rising rapidly once again.
Clear Skies and Strong Sunshine: Cloud cover has reduced significantly across most parts of the state. Clear skies are allowing direct solar radiation to heat the land surface, resulting in a steady increase in daytime temperatures. Patna and several other districts are expected to witness predominantly clear weather over the next 24 hours.
Delayed Arrival of Monsoon: The southwest monsoon has not yet reached Bihar. Meteorologists expect it to arrive between June 12 and June 16. Until monsoon clouds become active over the state, residents are likely to continue experiencing hot and humid conditions. The delay in the monsoon’s advance is being considered a major factor behind the rising temperatures.
Monsoon Update
According to the IMD, conditions remain favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, and additional parts of the Bay of Bengal region around June 4. Thereafter, the monsoon is expected to gradually progress towards eastern India.
However, Bihar will have to wait longer for monsoon rains. Weather experts believe residents may continue to face heat and humidity until monsoon activity becomes established across the state. Forecasts also suggest the possibility of below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures during June this year.
Potential Impact on Bihar
If the monsoon’s progress remains slow, maximum temperatures in several districts could remain between 40°C and 43°C over the coming days. Southern and western districts of Bihar may witness conditions similar to a heatwave, although no official heatwave warning has been issued so far.
The weather department has already indicated that temperatures may increase significantly during the first week of June.
Patna Weather Forecast
The state capital is expected to witness mainly clear skies on Wednesday. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 37°C, while the minimum temperature may remain near 28°C. Chances of rainfall are minimal, and bright sunshine is expected throughout the day.
Temperature Outlook for the Next Seven Days
The maximum temperature across Bihar is expected to remain between 39°C and 43°C on June 3. On June 4 and 5, temperatures could climb further, potentially touching 44°C in some areas. Weather officials forecast that hot and humid conditions are likely to persist across the state at least until June 9.
