Patna, June 17: The Bihar cabinet has approved amendments to the Bihar Outstanding Sportspersons Direct Recruitment Rules, 2026, expanding employment opportunities for athletes and providing higher-grade government appointments for those who have excelled at national and international sporting events.

The decision is aimed at recognising sporting achievements while strengthening career security for athletes representing Bihar and India. The revised rules introduce new eligibility criteria and pay scales linked to performance at events such as the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, National Games and Senior National Championships.

Olympic medallists eligible for higher-grade appointments

Under the amended rules, Olympic gold, silver and bronze medallists will be eligible for direct appointment to government posts in Pay Level-09, carrying a Grade Pay of Rs 5,400.

The same benefit will extend to athletes who have represented India in any format of sports disciplines included in the Olympic Games, as well as players who have represented India in any format of cricket. Gold medallists at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will also qualify for appointments in the same pay category.

Officials said the revised framework seeks to align government recruitment benefits more closely with the level of achievement attained by athletes on international platforms.

Asian and Commonwealth Games athletes included

The amended policy also provides government employment opportunities for athletes who have represented India in sports disciplines included in the Asian Games or Commonwealth Games.

Silver and bronze medallists from these competitions will be eligible for direct recruitment to posts in Pay Level-07, carrying a Grade Pay of Rs 4,600.

The inclusion of a broader group of international athletes is expected to increase the number of sportspersons eligible for recruitment under the state’s sports quota system.

National-level medal winners to benefit

The cabinet also approved provisions for athletes who have excelled at national competitions.

Gold and silver medal winners in any format of the National Games and Senior National Championships will be eligible for appointment in Pay Level-06, with a Grade Pay of Rs 4,200.

The move is intended to reward athletes who achieve success at the highest levels of domestic competition and encourage greater participation in competitive sports.

Sports minister welcomes decision

Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh described the amendment as a significant step towards recognising the contribution of athletes and strengthening the state’s sporting ecosystem.

“Athletes from Bihar have consistently demonstrated their talent and excellence on national and international platforms. Through this amended policy, we are ensuring that outstanding sportspersons receive due recognition and reward for their hard work, dedication, and achievements,” Singh said.

She added that the decision would motivate existing athletes while encouraging more young people to consider sports as a viable career path.

“I am confident that this decision will not only motivate our existing athletes to strive for greater success but will also inspire lakhs of young people across Bihar to consider sports as a viable and rewarding career option,” she said.

Focus on athlete welfare and sports development

Singh said the state government has been working to improve sports infrastructure, training facilities and welfare measures for athletes.

According to the minister, creating a transparent and rewarding pathway into government service for accomplished sportspersons has been one of the key priorities of the Sports Department.

The approval of the amended recruitment rules comes amid broader efforts by the Bihar government to promote sports participation and improve the state’s performance in national and international competitions.

Impact on Bihar

The revised policy is expected to benefit athletes from Bihar who often face uncertainty regarding career prospects after their competitive careers. By linking sporting achievement to government employment, the state hopes to provide greater financial security and incentivise excellence in sports.

The decision could also encourage increased participation in disciplines represented at the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and National Games, helping strengthen Bihar’s talent pipeline in the long term.

What happens next

The amended rules will come into effect after formal notification by the state government. The Sports Department is expected to issue detailed guidelines regarding the recruitment process and implementation of the revised eligibility criteria.

Officials believe the policy will make government employment more accessible to deserving athletes while contributing to the development of a stronger sporting culture across Bihar.
