Patna: Mokama is set to get a modern food hub under a Central Government scheme after the Municipal Council approved the proposal and earmarked land for the project during its board meeting on Friday.
Construction will begin once the project receives administrative and financial approval from the Central Government, according to the Municipal Council.
Mokama is one of four urban bodies in Bihar selected for the scheme, alongside Munger, Gaya and Barahiya. The project is expected to improve food infrastructure and public amenities while supporting local economic activity.
Modern Food Facilities Planned
The proposed food hub will include a food court, hygienic dining spaces, parking facilities, drinking water, public restrooms, seating areas and other civic amenities.
Municipal officials said the facility is intended to provide residents and visitors with quality food services at a single location while enhancing the city’s public infrastructure.
Selection Among Bihar’s Urban Bodies
The proposal was finalised during the Municipal Council’s board meeting, prompting positive reactions among residents after Mokama’s selection from Bihar’s 261 urban local bodies.
Officials said the scheme is expected to transform the selected locations by developing organised food and dining infrastructure.
Municipal Council Targets Holding Tax Evasion
The board meeting also approved measures to strengthen municipal revenue collection and reduce holding tax evasion.
As part of the plan, the Municipal Council will obtain a list of electricity consumers from the Electricity Department and compare it with holding tax records to identify properties that are not registered for tax payment.
According to the council, around 10,500 property owners currently pay holding tax within the municipal area. Members also decided to classify roads in newly developed localities to facilitate the assessment and collection of holding tax in those areas.
Focus on Development and Employment
The meeting, chaired by Municipal Chairperson Nilesh Kumar, also reviewed measures to accelerate ongoing development projects across the city.
Deputy Chairperson Neetu Devi, Executive Officer Santosh Kumar Rajak and 25 ward councillors attended the meeting, while two councillors were absent.
Speaking after the meeting, Nilesh Kumar described the proposed food hub as a significant development for Mokama under the Central Government’s initiative. He said the project is expected to improve access to modern dining facilities, generate employment opportunities and contribute to the city’s economic growth.
