Patna: Waste generated in Patna and 12 neighbouring urban local bodies will soon be used to generate electricity under a new waste-to-energy project proposed at Ramchak Bairia. The project will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 514 crore, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the participating urban bodies.

The planned facility is expected to generate 15 megawatts (MW) of electricity by processing municipal solid waste collected from Patna and surrounding towns.

Patna Municipal Corporation to Lead the Project

The Patna Municipal Corporation will serve as the nodal agency for the project. A Hyderabad-based private company has been selected to construct the plant and operate the electricity generation system.

Officials briefed representatives of all participating urban local bodies on the project’s implementation during a meeting held after the MoU was signed.

Waste From 12 Urban Bodies to Supplement Patna’s Supply

Under the project, around 900 metric tonnes of waste will initially be transported to the Ramchak Bairia facility every day from Patna and the 12 surrounding urban local bodies.

Officials said the plant will ultimately require around 1,400 metric tonnes of waste per day to operate at full capacity.

Patna currently generates approximately 600 metric tonnes of municipal waste daily. The remaining requirement will be met through waste collected from the participating urban bodies under the newly signed agreement.

Compost Unit Also Planned

In addition to electricity generation, the project will include a compost and organic manure production unit to process suitable biodegradable waste.

Authorities said the integrated approach is intended to improve waste management while reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Legacy Waste Clearance Underway

Preparatory work is already in progress at the 86-acre Ramchak Bairia dump yard, where legacy waste is being cleared to make way for the project.

According to officials, nearly 40 acres of land have already been cleared, allowing groundwork for the waste-to-energy plant to begin.

Project Expected Within 30 Months

The waste-to-energy facility is expected to be completed within about 30 months.

Officials said the project aims to address the growing challenge of municipal waste disposal while supporting cleaner energy generation through the scientific processing of solid waste.
