Old Potatoes being Chemically Treated and sold as new in Ranchi Markets, posing Health Risks
Ranchi: In Ranchi markets, old potatoes are being chemically treated and sold as new, deceiving customers and posing serious health risks. These potatoes, priced at ₹50 per kg, are being passed off as fresh, while in reality, they are old potatoes with their peel removed using ammonia, earning sellers a profit of ₹20 per kg.
An investigation by Bhaskar revealed that sellers soak old potatoes in a chemical solution of ammonia for 12 hours, which thins the peel. The potatoes are then rubbed with red soil to make them look freshly harvested. These potatoes, however, spoil quickly, turning color and rotting within two days. Despite being advertised as fresh produce from Ramgarh and nearby areas, they are far from it.
Medical experts warn of the dangers associated with consuming these chemically treated potatoes. Dr. Shubham Shekhar from Sadar Hospital, Ranchi, explained that ammonia-laced potatoes can harm the kidneys and liver, and cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. Prolonged consumption may lead to severe health issues, including stomach pain and burning sensations.
Local wholesalers, like Dharmendra Sahu, confirmed that genuine new potatoes have not yet entered the market. Many old vendors refuse to sell these chemically treated potatoes, but occasional sellers have been capitalizing on the fraudulent practice, misleading customers.
Consumers are urged to remain cautious when purchasing potatoes to avoid falling victim to this dangerous scam.
