Patna: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna has announced that its orthopaedic department has strengthened its expertise in advanced joint replacement surgery after Dr. Sudeep Kumar, Professor and Unit Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, completed a three-week international clinical fellowship in the United States.
According to the institute, the fellowship focused on Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA), Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) and the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) for hip replacement. AIIMS Patna said the training is expected to support the delivery of advanced orthopaedic care for patients in Bihar.
Advanced Training at Penn Medicine
According to AIIMS Patna, the fellowship was conducted at the Penn Medicine Centre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during June–July 2026.
The programme was undertaken under the mentorship of Dr. Neil Perry Sheth, whom the institute described as an expert in complex hip and knee reconstruction.
Officials said the fellowship provided exposure to evidence-based surgical techniques, advanced implant technologies, enhanced recovery protocols and multidisciplinary perioperative care for complex joint replacement procedures.
Participation in Complex Surgical Procedures
According to the institute, Dr. Kumar participated in more than 50 advanced hip and knee replacement surgeries, including revision arthroplasty procedures.
The fellowship also included specialised outpatient clinics, discussions on complex clinical cases, pre-operative planning, implant selection, management of complications, rehabilitation strategies and contemporary surgical techniques with multidisciplinary teams.
AIIMS Patna Highlights Global Collaboration
Congratulating Dr. Kumar, Executive Director Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal said international clinical exposure enables faculty members to bring the latest medical advances back to India.
According to the institute, Agarwal said AIIMS Patna remains committed to strengthening global academic collaborations to improve clinical outcomes and expand access to specialised healthcare services for patients in Bihar.
Focus on Modern Hip Replacement Techniques
According to AIIMS Patna, the fellowship also provided specialised training in the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) for total hip replacement.
The institute said the muscle-sparing technique has gained increasing international acceptance and, in appropriately selected patients, may be associated with reduced muscle damage, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays and faster rehabilitation while maintaining favourable long-term outcomes.
Growing Demand for Joint Replacement Surgery
According to AIIMS Patna, joint replacement surgery is widely used to restore mobility in patients with advanced arthritis, trauma-related joint damage and other degenerative conditions.
The institute said global demand for hip and knee replacement procedures continues to rise due to increasing life expectancy, an ageing population and the growing prevalence of osteoarthritis. It added that India has also seen a steady increase in joint replacement surgeries as awareness and access to specialised treatment improve.
Institute Plans Continued Skill Development
According to AIIMS Patna, the institute will continue encouraging faculty participation in national and international fellowships, research collaborations and skill development programmes.
